File types in AutoCAD can be automatically recognized and handled through the system, including import, export and conversion. The drawing format, DWG or DXF, is a vector graphics file, so it supports the manipulation and conversion of CAD models in AutoCAD. AutoCAD also supports the DWG extension for 2D drawings and DGN extensions for 3D drawings.
An AutoCAD drawing file must be equipped with a number of extensions to make it unique and work within the drawing system. An AutoCAD drawing file is an XML text file with a specific structure. Layout family, which defines the relationship of the model to the paper area
The only mandatory tag element is the “dwg” tag. Other elements may be nested or contained within other elements.
The dwg element is the root element of the drawing file. It is also known as “paper” or “master” element. A “layers” tag is required if any layers are to be stored in the file.
