the hand-throwing origami bird experiment was considered to be a clear and effective means to explain the effect of environmental selection on speciation. however, to fully grasp the process of speciation, it is necessary to understand a number of factors that are missing in the hand-throwing origami bird experiment, such as the genetic mechanisms underlying speciation. with obs, the teacher can add such factors to the simulation software, using them to explain the phenomenon of speciation.
the simulation starts with 50 origami birds that are already differentiated into two groups (wild-type and mutant). the birds are set up to grow and reproduce (randomly) as indicated by the arrows. students can adjust the parameters of the simulation, such as mutation rate and the numbers of offspring per generation, to simulate the evolutionary process. the results are stored in a data file, which can be displayed as a video. we created a movie of the simulation and presented it to the students as a demonstration of the simulation, but the video has not been released publicly.
the results of the hand-throwing experiment indicated that the students learned how mutations alter phenotype and the nature of the phenotypic changes. moreover, the students’ understanding of natural selection improved from the hand-throwing experiment to the computer simulation. however, it was difficult to incorporate the concept of speciation into the protocol. since we intended to include the results of the computer simulation in the experiment with obs, we first needed to modify the protocol. the new protocol was adopted in the present study and it includes more than 100 steps, which is impossible for a single class to complete. the new protocol, as well as the results of the new protocol, were introduced in the paper as an addendum. the students who participated in the experiments were informed about the results of the simulation, and they reported an understanding of the key concepts of evolution. in the future, we plan to include the results of the computer simulation in the experiment with obs. if students were able to operate the simulation directly, they would gain a more intuitive understanding of evolutionary mechanisms by freely changing the parameters of the obs out of curiosity.
