on the day of the experiment, the beam dump was then replaced by a grafit solution and observed for several weeks. the bottom graphite was then taken out of the beam dump and put back into the original position, again leaving all three graphite beams in place for several weeks. the graphite beams were examined on a regular basis, and the nitrogen gas leaks were monitored. this experiment revealed that the bottom graphite beam was indeed decomposed, meaning that the solution in the beam dump was indeed responsible for the nitrogen gas leaks.
to produce the metal dump prototype, the team has to make a grafit solution (see box). the grafit solution is then placed into the mould and heated to some high temperature for a long period of time. the heat causes the grafit to decompose and release the nitrogen gas build-up. the gas is vented to the outside of the beam dump. the prototype will need to be placed inside the beam dump before the new beam dump is used and it will be tested in the same way as the prototype for the current beam dump, to ensure that the same thing happens.
