Grand Theft Auto IV – AGB Golden Team
The game that laid the groundwork for Grand Theft Auto’s innovation and contribution to the RPG genre. The original Neverwinter Nights inspired other developers to recreate and improve upon the complexity of its systems, creating the engine upon which most of the Grand Theft Auto series would be based. Open world games have since become a staple of the genre, the cornerstone of the RPG that would become Rockstar’s peerless achievement.
Grand Theft Auto IV sold over 50 million copies across all formats – and has become the subject of countless academic papers and first-person journalism. It has been studied as a cultural phenomenon, a game of games, a demonstration of the ability of gaming to be deployed as a media form, a work of art, a science fiction environment, and even a type of therapy. It has made an immeasurable difference in the treatment of mental illness, and has been used as a teaching tool by academic psychologists and educationalists.

Some of our favourites came from companies you’ve never heard of, and some of them came from publishers that no longer exist. But all of them deserve recognition, and they all count towards our 50 Best Games of All Time. You’ll notice some of them used different genres or platforms. Many of our all-time favourite games, and the impact they’ve had, span quite a bit more than our traditional triple-A three console and one handheld market. There are games that both took the scene by storm and helped define it.
