Moreover, The Bodleian Library has a special relation to book historians. One of the first scholars to study the history of printing in India was Henry Thomas Colebrooke and his friend William Hunter. The Bodleian acquired a number of Hunter’s manuscripts when the Regius Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford died in 1830.

Restrictions on the users of Merton College Library were lifted in 1867, and in 1872 Stephen Bruce, 11th Earl of Elgin, gave money to purchase some books for it. This was followed by some 60,000 books in 1886, and by 1894 Merton had a collection of over 60,000 volumes. However, in the period between 1867 and 1894 the library underwent a massive expansion, becoming known as the the Elgin Collection. It was these acquisitions, together with the influx of such previous acquisitions as the books of the Franciscan fathers from the early thirteenth century, that transformed Merton into the largest medieval library in England. Of the original 5230 volumes only a small number are in a state where they are available for consultation, but the modern facsimile edition of the handwriting MS. is available for all.
The largest collection of medieval manuscripts in England and the largest university library of medieval manuscripts, the Bodleian has over 55,000 medieval manuscripts, some of which date back as far as the ninth century. The Bodleian also offers the largest collection of incunabula and early printed books and has several major exhibitions each year.
The University of Oxford is where the main collection of Merton manuscripts is found, located in the special collections library of the Bodleian, with around 60,000 medieval manuscripts, where the majority were written in Latin. The Bodleian is the most significant repository of medieval manuscripts and the most important repository of the earliest printed books in the world, and is the largest library of medieval manuscripts and the largest single body of incunabula in the world. The Bodleian also holds the only collection of medieval lectures to survive from the early universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The collection also contains a large number of manuscripts from the continent, most notably from Germany. The Bodleian is over 140 years old, formed when the university bought the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps, in 1854.
