There are a few other things worth mentioning. First, when used with Red Giant Universe 3, you can still access the software and add finishing touches after your video project is finished. It saves you from having to purchase a whole new set of tools and software if you want to make an extra change to your video. Second, they added the ability for you to make your own presets, which really makes the workflow for the colorist a lot easier. The presets they have are great for the looks, and they give you a quick way to make your own looks and work with your timeline. If you are a mocha user, you can now use the copy options within your timeline to copy the look you have created, and the controls will remain in exactly the same position.
Even though Colorista is a Photoshop tool, it offers a number of features designed to emulate some of the great software-less onscreen processes out there, like making a copy of your screen into black and white for cropping, a greenscreen effect that is really easy and fun to do, a vignette effect that adds a circle to the frame, and even a funky black and white filter. Even though I rarely shoot in black and white, I still found the defaults of the N. 1 setting to be very interesting; turning the blacks into an antique paper look and choosing a middle of the road noise profile. I tried out the vignette a few times and for the most part it was pretty good. Even though I manually applied the effect, it does have its limits. For example, if you have a main subject in the image that you dont want to be affected by the vignette, it will get in the way.
Colorista also has a new Instant Preview feature that can be used to make changes to footage and immediately see the effect of those changes. With the default Skydance look, in this case, I clicked on the Edit button, went to the Edit Look pane, and there was already a ton of my footage there, but I wanted to see how it would look with some different keys. I applied the key that I wanted and went back to the Look window, scrolled to the Top of the preview window and found that it had rendered the key perfectly.
The Magic Bullet Looks plugins allow you to apply any of the looks in the suite to footage on the timeline, and you can save all your looks as presets. While you are working on your edit, you can select the looks you would like to apply at any point using the Look Select button. The Magic Bullet Looks look will also change at the same time as you change the color in the Magic Bullet Colorista Tools. To switch back to the settings that you had selected, click the Apply Changes button, or Control+Shift+Z on the keyboard, to add the look to the timeline.
This is where Red Giant Magic Bullet Suite is really useful, as it is designed for the video editor. You can now create your own looks to use with preset settings or even create your own custom presets by uploading or copying any of the looks you want, drag them on top of the main “Magic Bullet” and edit it. This is a huge leap in functionality as editing your own looks makes them infinitely customizable and allow for a seamless workflow between color correction and imaging.
Red Giant brought back some of their color conversion tools from Colorist Pro, and we now have Universal Match, which is ideal for non-linear editors. For those familiar with PhotoShop Lightroom, Red Giant uses a similar standard workflow for importing, exporting, and editing. Some of the looks are also a bit different, as you can see the Vignette, Glow, Infrared, Red Level, and Color Matte controls which are missing from Colorist Pro.
